Below is the list of everyone who is mentioned in the Power Rankings video. 2014/15 Player Review – Jonathan Huberdeau

hubby

Jonathan Huberdeau is yet another one of those young developing players for the Panthers that will either make or break this teams future success. After winning the Calder a couple years ago, and then having a uneven sophomore season, Huberdeau finally started to show his real promise in the later half of 2015.

During most of the 1st half of this season it looked like maybe all Huberdeau would ever be was a less  than 20 goal guy who was easily shoved off  the puck. There were even trade rumors, albeit mostly fan induced, but nonetheless it was clear that he was not reaching what we all assumed was his potential. Then something happened that I believe was  the impetus to his rapidly improving play, and I am not talking about Jagr…

What I think turned Huberdeau’s lights on was the rather nice contract signed by Nick Bjugstad. I noticed the very next game, suddenly Huberdeau was fighting for the puck relentlessly, and no longer was  the puck ” rolling off his stick” every time he was pressured. It seemed that he had turned a corner very suddenly and sharply, and I believe that the Bjugstad signing was the impetus. Now I cant say exactly why that would be. Maybe he saw the Panthers we going to try to keep this young  team together and he wanted to show he belonged here. Maybe someone inside  the organization spoke to him about needing step up like Bjugstad. Who knows. What was obvious was that Huberdeau had become aware that more effort was needed.

Positives

When playing with passion, Huberdeau is an amazingly skilled skater & passer. He can easily control the puck with semi-spins and turns , leaving defenders in the dust. He has a strong ability to know where his teammates are on the ice, and most of his passes are razor sharp. He is not afraid to mix it up in the corners either. With his puck handling skills he excels in the area around  the net as he can grab the puck in close quarters. As long as he continues to develop the idea that he should shoot more, his continued progress seems a sure bet.

Negatives

Most of the negatives in his game were cleaned up in the later part of the year. Fighting for the puck, focusing better on controlling the puck once its on his stick, and not getting pushed around. Again when he plays with passion there really aren’t many holes in his game. If you want to get picky you could say he needs to go to  the front of the net more. but really , he ended the year at about a 75 point pace, so just keep improving!

Future

Maybe I am wrong but I don’t think he will ever been a 40 goal scorer. He doesn’t have a blazing shot like Pirri and probably lacks the size to really get down and dirty in front of the net consistently night after night. However, if he can get another year with Jagr maybe that changes, and certainly he could be a 50 assist guy annually.  Huberdeau has the proper attitude to lead him to continued improvement. Like Barkov, getting Jagr back would help immensely. Look for Huberdeau to have a 70-80 point season next year with 30 goals a real possibility.

2014/15 Player Review – Alexander “Sasha” Barkov

aleksander-barkov-florida-panthers

To really review Barkov’s season, you have to break it down into 3 sections. Coming back from injury after last year, he saw an expected slow start. As the season progressed and he gained confidence, Barkov’s play began to improve at a high arc. Once Jagr was onboard , Barkov basically went nuts and showed significant promise for  the future.

Positives

Barkov has shown first and foremost that he is learning how to use his size and skill to control the puck. Especially once Jagr was around, you really saw him almost try to emulate his style of hoarding the puck in the corners and around the boards. He is also a good shot, meaning he doesn’t miss the net a ton. There are plenty of Panther players who shoot alot of ” high off the glass ” shots. Sasha is not one of them. Though nobody would mistake him for a tough guy, he seemed alot stronger along the boards this year , where maybe last year he was getting tossed around a bit. Overall he has shown excellent improvement and that should continue, especially if the Panthers can resign Jagr.

Negatives

Barkov’s game has been solid to very solid in most aspects. Two areas stick out like sore thumbs however. Firstly is his seemingly stubborn desire to make  that extra pass. Again, once Jagr came around this habit diminished, and it showed in his goal scoring. But it seems like his first thought is to pass the puck far too often, so hopefully another summer can cure some of  that. He simply needs to shoot more!

The other area that’s not quite where it needs to be is in the faceoff circle. Simply put, to be a real deal 1st line center he needs to significantly improve in the circle. Considering the line he is on with Huberdeau & Jagr being such a puck possession based line, its imperative to their success that Barkov win more faceoffs. We even saw a few times where Bolland would come in for the faceoff & then go off so the full line could be on.  Of course he is a young player and will improve with experience, but in my opinion its the #1 thing he should work on this summer.

Future

In my opinion, Barkov can be a 75 point guy if he gets to play with Hub & Jagr for a couple more years. Maybe 30 goals – 45 assists range. I feel with his deferring personality he needs to be on a line with aggressive mates to reach his full potential, but no mistake this kid has a bright future!

Beezers Rats 100% Florida Panthers Blog

rats in cup

Hey cats fans! So I had this idea at the end of the 2014/2015 season to give my un-expert opinion of each Florida Panthers player, breaking down what they do well, not so well, and my vision for their future. So over the course of the summer I will be reviewing most of the current team. My opinions are just that, opinions. I don’t have any inside knowledge other than watching every game this year & being a fan since the teams inception. Even though the Scott Mellanby signature has faded off my original jacket. my love for the team still grows. Hope you enjoy the reviews & any other Panther related stuff I may post.
